It can be set up to not be overly intrusive in use, and compared to several other antivirus software that I have previously tested, Avast is not a CPU resource hog, and has very little impact on performance. Every now and then it has picked up, alerted, and isolated potential threats. Avast has several active ‘shields’ that will constantly screen software, Emails, and any web activity. If you tinker and install lots of different apps from miscellaneous sources, get multiple emails with attachments from multiple sources, etc. In part, the risk will depend what you do with your Mac, if you only ever use the preinstalled (Apple approved) apps, your risks are low. Although Mac viruses, malware and ransomware maybe much rarer than for Windows PCs, they do exist, and in my opinion, it’s worthwhile trying to protect yourself (and others) from the potentially devastating impact of any infection.
